You’ve seen the ads and heard the infomercials of home-based vendors. They crow about how they built a 6 or 7-figure income while lounging around the house in their night clothes. They make getting rich web-based sound so easy, it’s hard to believe them, especially when they’re trying to promote their own products. Naturally, your rip-off detector detonates, and you end up being defensive. Why? Because you’ve also heard the sob stories concerning people who have lost their investments trying to create Web-based businesses on their own.
But the online business world doesn’t run entirely on evil. The truth is, there are a great many home Internet businesspeople who have cracked the code and are enjoying the payoff legitimately. So how did they do it? Why are they not failures?
The most successful reputable web-based marketers do just two fundamental things:
1. They find a hungry target market, and search for a product or service nourishes them. This may sound overly obvious, but the difference between online marketing pros and amateurs is that the amateurs tend to gravitate products to which they have an emotional attachment. If web-based marketing has a cardinal rule, it’s to train your strategizing upon your customers’ wants, needs and interests, not your own.
There’s nothing wrong to make a hobby of 8-track tapes, for instance. But there is something wrong with trying to market to a nonexistent audience if your objective is to be successful. If your customer research were to tell you, however, that your fellow 8-track enthusiasts were doing thousands of online searches for information finding replacment parts, making, or repairing for 8-track players, then you would have discover what the marketing professionals refer to as a “hungry crowd” and an “audience niche.”
Your next steps would be to find out if there is an Online vendor of 8-track parts or information who has an affiliate program. If so, the vendor would give you an affiliate Web page, and you would write online articles and blog linking to it. Then if a member of your 8-track player “hungry crowd” were to click on the link of your affiliate sales page and make a purchase, you would be paid a commission.
That’s really just about it — Web marketing in nutshell. It doesn’t really sound that complicated, does it? So what’s so tricky about it? That brings us to the second thing the most successful legitimate online marketers do:
2. They find ANOTHER hungry crowd, and find and feed them the product or service that THEY need. Then find another. And another. And another. Wealth and success at legit Web marketing is possible, but not if you’re unmotivated and disorganized and undisciplined because you’re not in an office or under a boss’ supervision.
